Robert Boudwin is an accomplished performer, marketer, coach, children’s book author, producer of critically acclaimed school shows, philanthropist and organ donation awareness activist. He is an interactive physical improvisational artist, sketch comedian, viral media sensation, innovative sports entertainment trendsetter, and has inspired tens of thousands as a public speaker through his motivational “SMILES” presentation, his family’s personal story with organ donation entitled “Tragedy To Triumph” & his personal career story of perseverance & persistence along the road less traveled.
Through his work as Houston Rockets mascot “Clutch the Bear,” Robert won the first NBA mascot of the year title in 2005 and again in 2013. He has been honored by his fellow NBA mascots with the yearly leadership award 3 times now at their annual mascot conference. Boudwin was a 2006 inductee into the Mascot Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility as Clutch, a character he created, and has received countless other industry awards, but is most thankful for all the amazing fans who have welcomed him into their hearts over his 21 year tenure as Clutch 1,000+ Rockets games and 6,000+ shows/appearances/events across Houston. In addition to Clutch, Robert has also created and portrayed Houston Comets (WNBA) mascot Haley, Houston Thunderbears (AFL) mascot Thunder, Texas Terror (AFL) mascot Big Frank, University of Delaware mascot YoUDee, Wissahickon High School mascot The Trojan, Houston Area Menchies Frozen Yogurt’s Menchie, and several other minor league and corporate mascots throughout his career.
In addition to entertaining millions of US fans over the last 25 years, he has also delighted fans internationally in 11 other countries including China, Russia, Kosovo, Bosnia, England, France, Spain, Philippines, Mexico, Canada, and Taiwan. Jack Nicholson, Kevin Costner, George Bush Sr., Tiger Woods, Adam Sandler, Bill Murray, Chris Tucker, Andy Roddick, Beyonce, and Jay-Z are just a few of the Hollywood “A listers” and sports stars with whom Robert has performed skits and routines. Not only has Boudwin dedicated his career to performing and creating comedy, he has also spent quite a bit of it sharing the tricks of the trade with fellow performers and aspiring mascots. Through his mascot camps and individual training and consulting sessions for organizations ranging from professional sports teams and major Universities to corporations and high schools, Robert has personally coached over 500 mascots across the country.
A proud innovator, Robert introduced “AIR” or inflatable mascots to professional sports in 1997 with fan favorite “AIR” Clutch, and “Big Mouth” Clutch in 2007. Other highlighted innovations include mascot bowling and balancing on a 4 foot walking globe while shooting baskets. In 1996, Robert created the first of his “Building a Future” school shows, now enjoyed over 1,750 times by Houston area elementary schools and more than 1.2 million students with 600 out of the 800 Houston public elementary schools having hosted him as Clutch to inspire and motivate their students many repeatedly year after year. He built and managed Clutch’s Facebook following to 145,000 fans which is 3 times more than any other sports mascot in America. In 2009, his short story, “A Clutch Win,” was published in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inside Basketball.
Over the last 10 years, Robert has been energized to participate in Houston’s leadership out of costume through non-profit service on 3 United Way Committees and Councils and currently serves on the corporate board of directors for Life Gift, The Queensbury Theatre & The Todd Krampitz Foundation. He has diligently served as an advocate for Life Gift, the Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) that services Houston. His focus has been on advocating for everyone to say YES to organ donation and has served in a marketing/promotions/emcee capacity for other organizations associated with organ donation, including Nora’s Home, The Houston Sports Authority’s Transplant Games of America Host Committee & Taylor’s Gift. Robert’s father Paul’s life was saved by an organ donor and he has run the Houston ½ Marathon twice now in full costume as Clutch to promote the cause. Robert’s wife Amy (pictured below who has been know to “help” him with his work from time to time) and he are raising 5 children including 2 sets of twins the second of which are due the first week of August, 2016. They had a slightly different way of announcing this to friends as seen below. They wed on Valentine’s Day 2014 in a “unique” style with some of Robert’s closest friends in the wedding as seen below. Finally, the video at the bottom of this page which went viral is of Robert’s 1st set of twins Jack & Luke battling it out Superman vs Batman style in front of 18,000 fans on the night of the movie premier showcasing their 4 years of Tae Kwon Do training and sparring.
